Dave Kasper Guest Artist Performs With Avon Lake Jazz Ensemble on Thursday, March 1st, 2012 at 7:30pm in the Avon Lake Performing Arts Center.
Twenty-seven year old Davey “Gravy” Kasper, woodwinds (Saxophones, Clarinets, Flutes and EWI) , has been privileged to play with the Temptations, Al Martino, Guy Lombardo, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra (Playing the role of "Jimmy Dorsey), Tito Puente Jr., Either Orchestra and has opened up for Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Pancho Sanchez and Tony Bennett. Kasper grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland and received his degree in music from Cleveland State University in the summer of 2006. Active on the local music scene, Kasper enjoys teaching saxophone, clarinet and flute in Downtown Cleveland and the Suburbs. A journey man musician since his early teens, Kasper is involved playing with many groups in town regularly including: Revolution Brass Band, Velvet Voyage, Shout, Ernie Krivda and the Fat Tuesday Big Band, Dan Zola Orchestra, Eddie Brunswick and the Hot Rod Lincoln's and several creative projects. Dance: The Brookside Ski Club is sponsoring a semi-formal dance in the high school gym on Saturday – February 18, 2012. The doors will open and the dance start at 8:00 p.m. and end at 11:00 p.m. All students must secure transportation and leave the premises by 11:20 p.m. Ticket prices are $10.00 presale. Tickets will be on sale the week of February 13 through 17, 2012. Tickets will be sold at Brookside in the main lobby during the lunch periods and after school in Room 100A with Mrs. Golden until 3:30 p.m. for our JVS students. Ticket price Saturday night at the dance will be $15.00. Dress will be semi-formal.

Attention Juniors: Future Connections, a program of University Circle Inc, is an 8 week summer study and internship opportunity for rising seniors in high school. There will be 5 students from Lorain County chosen through an application and interview process. Students earn a $1,000 stipend for their work. The internship includes 4 weeks at a cultural institution and 4 weeks at a business along with special workshops. The ideal candidate is reliable, high-achieving, and interested in math and science. Application information is available from Mrs. Holland. Deadline is February 15th.
Attention students: Letters regarding participation in the PSEO Program for the 2012-2013 school year are available to students in their homerooms this morning. After only 3 years EHS went into North Shore Conference Tourney as one of the underdogs to more experienced teams but let them know we are on the rise! Last year we finished in 11th place. This year our boys fell only 53 pins short of first place taking 4th out of 15! Great scores bowled by our Varsity boys were:

Talent show
All students, got talent? Then it is time to show it. The fine arts department is now accepting applications for this year Elyria high school talent show. If you dance, sing, play an instrument, rock out in a band, then this event is for you. If chosen, you will have the opportunity to perform on stage in our auditorium. Deadline for applications is February 24. Applications for this year’s talent show can be picked up in the band room.

Juniors: the American Legion will again send juniors to attend Boys’ State or Girls’ State this summer! Both are weeklong leadership seminars. Boys’ State is held at BGSU and Girls’ State is at Ashland University. Participants will experience hands-on operations of our democratic form of government, the organization of political parties and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government. It’s a fun fast paced 8 days where new friendships with peers from all over Ohio develop and leadership skills strengthened. If interested in competing for one of the ALL-expense paid spots – stop in guidance and sign up!

Hockey: Congratulations to the Midview Hockey team who beat NDCL Saturday, 3-1 and Mayfield on Sunday at home 4-1. They went undefeated in divisional play this year with a perfect record of 12-0. They have not lost a divisional game in 2 years. However, the year is not over for the Middies as they have the Baron Cup and finally the state playoffs. Please support them tonight in the first game of the Baron Cup as they take on Western Reserve Academy at Brooklyn Rec Center at 6:30.

Attention Students: The Great Lakes Science Center has an exciting and unique volunteer opportunity for students who are interested in science and science education: Science Break Camps. Camps run during school breaks, which include sessions for winter, spring and 10 weeks in the summer.
Camp volunteers are the extra hands and eyes for the camp staff. Volunteers help facilitate camp activities and operations. Camp volunteers monitor groups of younger children and act as role models for appropriate behavior and safety. Volunteers should have an enthusiasm for the arts and sciences which is an essential part of engaging our campers in the many different classes we offer.
Spring Break Camp dates are March 26-30 & April 9-13 all sessions will be held at Great Lakes Science Center in downtown Cleveland. A letter of recommendation is not required but it is recommended. Letters of recommendation should be submitted at the student’s interview. Applications are due no later than February 24, 2012.
Interviews will be scheduled on February 28 & 29 from 3:00 to 5:30pm and Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 9:30am – 12:00pm. The minimum commitment for Spring Break Camps is one eight-hour day. Camp hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm. Camp volunteers are required to work a minimum of one 8 hour day and attend mandatory training. Mandatory Training will be held March 18, 2012 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm.
