Advisory Committees The formation of strong partnerships between the Lorain County JVS and the business/industrial community encourages employers to invest in the training of their future workforce. Numerous opportunities exist for employers to help shape and enhance the vocational training at the JVS while accessing a pool of highly skilled job candidates in the process. This brochure will outline these opportunities and the services offered by the Lorain County JVS Career Services Office. Advisory Committees Local business and industry members are invited to become involved in Advisory Committees. An Advisory Committee, which meets twice a year, is comprised of program teachers and employers. Business and industry advisors are asked to help guide program development so that curriculum and equipment are in line with the needs and standards of employers. Employer involvement ensures that JVS Programs keep pace with on-going changes in the workplace. Work-Based Learning Experiences Employers are asked to consider providing Work-based Learning experiences for students. These experiences can be paid or unpaid, and are generally short in duration. They are designed to let students hone the skills they've learned in the vocational lab and acquire new skills specific to the worksite. Work-based learning experiences allow an employer to assess the student's, skills, abilities, work ethic and employment potential. Summer Internship The Summer Internship Program is an on-the-job, paid summer training experience for high school students between their junior & senior years. The goal of the Summer Internship Program is to enhance student competencies and develop additional skills that strengthen personal qualities important in the workplace. Businesses commit to employ a Summer Intern a minimum of 225 hours. There is no limit to the amount of additional hours that a student may work. Participating students may qualify for continued part-time work as early as September of their senior school year. Employers are asked to pair their Summer Intern with a trained mentor. This person should be an experienced employee that the student can learn from and model. A JVS Job Coach will also visit the student at the worksite several times during the Internship. The Job Coach will help the student adjust to the workplace culture and work with the mentor to evaluate the student's job performance. Summer Internship students are exempt from all federal and state unemployment taxes. Students should, however, be covered under a company's Workers' Compensation Insurance. Click here for more information on the Summer Internship Program. Job Placement Service An important goal of vocational education is effective job placement for students. The Job Placement Service matches students' skills and career interests with employers' needs. Effective job matches will reduce an employer's hiring and turnover costs. Job Placement may begin in September for high school students who have completed the Summer Internship Program and January for all other qualifying seniors. Eligible students are permitted to work during the lab portion of the school day up to 100 half-days or 50 full-days during their senior year. Adult students in full-time career development programs are available for job placement during the 2nd semester of their training. Adults can take advantage of day or evening employment opportunities. Prior to employment, all students and their employers will complete a formal Training Agreement. The Training Agreement outlines personal information and lists job duties and responsibilities. Additionally, a Training Agreement allows 16 & 17 year old high school students to legally perform most job duties by exempting them from some of the Child Labor Laws. Job Posting Service The JVS Career Services Office serves as a liaison between students & the employment community. An ongoing database of available employment opportunities is maintained and made available to job seekers. Job seekers are directed to potential employment opportunities based on their skills, training and experience. Employers are encouraged to send job postings to Career Services by mail, fax, or e-mail. Information about job openings can also be entered directly into our database by clicking here under Career Services on the menu bar . As a partner in the Employment netWork, the JVS Career Services Office will often share job postings with netWork organizations and agencies that can provide additional qualified job candidates.
