Students Celebrate Right To Read Week

March 13, 2008 -- JVS students recently celebrated National “Right to Read Week”, by participating in a wide variety of activities to highlight and share information about one of their favorite books.

The projects included t-shirt designs, picture books for younger students, poems, decorative cakes, letters, posterboard displays, and even a DVD book review.

Eighty-four students submitted projects to be judged by their classmates and teachers. The following three projects were awarded top honors and the students each received a $20 gift card to Border’s Book Store.

Katie Dennis (Midview), designed posters about the book Speak. Amber Smith (North Ridgeville) created an childrens’ alphabet picture book about her reading selection titled Eclipse. Alicia Bosma (Oberlin) baked and decorated a cake to express what she liked best about the book called The Pajama Game. The winners are all students in the Cosmetology Program.

“We want to congratulate not only the winners, but everyone who participated in this school-wide initiative,” stated Dawn Balog, the JVS instructor who coordinated the event. “Celebrating ’Right to Read Week’, is an excellent way to remember that in the United States of America we can freely choose our reading selections; this isn’t the case in every society and it’s something we shouldn’t take for granted.”
