March 1, 2010 -- Lorain County JVS students were given the challenge to design a logo for the Spring Blood Drive on March 2 and 3. Prizes for the drive were made possible by a grant by the Lorain County JVS Educational Foundation.
Of the 32 entries, students and staff voted for the following winners: Marissa Liller, a junior from Keystone in the Web & Graphic Design Program, won 1st place and $100. Amanda Smith, a Culinary senior from Amherst, came in second and won $50. Maxx Broski, a Marketing/Management senior from Oberlin, won third prize of $25 and Tyler Novosielski, a Firelands junior in the Maintenance Services Program, took fourth prize of $25.
LifeShare donates $500 to the JVS for every 35 pints of blood collected. The JVS averages approximately $4-5,000 in scholarships each year. This money is then used for student scholarships for graduating seniors in May.
"According to Lifeshare, Lorain County JVS is one of the top 3 schools of any size (including LCCC) in Northern Ohio in terms of blood donated to their services. The blood bank services rely very heavily on our schools as a major source of blood donation. We can be proud that we are doing our share and more," commented Susan Wallace, AHS/DHO instructor. "What a wonderful community service and scholarship funding opportunity our relationship with Lifeshare Blood Services provides for us at the JVS."
