JVS Greenhouse Open for Poinsettia Sales in December

The Lorain County JVS Landscape and Greenhouse Management Program is sponsoring a holiday wreath and poinsettia sale, beginning December 1st.

Poinsettias range in price from $3.00-$9.00 depending on size, and are available in a variety of colors.

Wreaths and swags range in price from $5.00-$10.00.

Flower arrangements and fresh flowers are also available or can be ordered.

JVS Students Learn About Electoral College Through Mock Election

Lorain County JVS students are accustom to engaging learning environments and recently received a hands-on social studies lesson about how the Electoral College was used to select the new president.

"Students in all of our social studies classes have researched a candidate and prepared campaign literature," said JVS social studies instructor Erin Byrne. "Some classes prepared signs, others brochures, and others tri-fold display boards."

The campaign literature was displayed during an election rally in a very patriotically decorated activity room; complete with American Flags and life size Obama and McCain cutouts. All JVS students and staff had the opportunity to view the campaign literature in preparation for the JVS "election".

Business Students Brighten Thanksgiving Tables at Retirement Village

Lorain County JVS business students are helping to brighten the Thanksgiving holidays for over 60 residents of The Elms Retirement Village in Wellington.

Students in Cindi Whitney's Office and Administrative Assistant Program are using their Microsoft Office and other computer skills to design Thanksgiving placemats and bookmarks.

"Hopefully, through this community-service project, my students can make Thanksgiving a special day for someone in the community that they don't even know," stated Whitney.

Baking & Pastry Students Create Signature Dessert

Two Lorain County JVS Baking & Pastry Arts students created the signature dessert served at the Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County's "Women of Compassion" event at Lorain County Community College.

Alyssa Chambers (Amherst) and Angela Gorka (Sheffield) worked together to create a Chocolate Mousse with Crème Anglaise Cake. "It's not your average, run-of-the-mill recipe," stated Baking & Pastry Instructor Chris Moore, "but our students pride themselves on being able to create rich, decadent and fulfilling desserts."

"Angela and Alyssa are both very good students," continued Moore. "They were chosen to create this special dessert to recognize and reward all of their hard work."

JVS Students Stay Involved in Home School Sports and Activities
JVS students involved in Fall Sports.

Students who spend their junior and senior years pursuing a career-technical education at the JVS don't have to give up the "fun" activities at their home schools.

JVS students are encouraged to remain active in home school extracurricular activities including clubs, sports programs, pep rallies, and holiday events and socials.

There is an open communication between the JVS and the home schools to keep students informed of events and activities. Home school announcements are posted on the JVS website, www.lcjvs.com under "Announcements."

A Mother's Perspective--JVS Was The Perfect Choice For Her Son
Craig Kroll, and his mother, Rebecca Jones.

When her son, Craig Kroll, made the decision to attend the Lorain County Joint Vocational School, Rebecca Jones found herself frequently defending his decision.

"I had some initial misgivings when Craig first said he wanted to attend the JVS," admitted Jones. "We would frequently get comments from our friends like, 'I'm surprised you let Craig make that decision.'"

"After some thoughtful discussions, Craig's father and I decided that if he wanted to go to the JVS, we would support his decision," affirmed Jones. "I'm proud to say it was one of the wisest 'family decisions' we have ever made."

Jones recalled that her son, a 1991 Wellington High School graduate, decided early on that he wanted to study something a little different than what was offered in a traditional high school.

Adult Students Tour Eco-Friendly Aveda Salon

Students in the JVS Adult Career Center's cosmetology program recently toured the Aveda Institute in Mentor, Ohio.

"The purpose of this field trip was to give our students exposure to one of the work environments they might like to explore after they graduate and receive their state-board license," stated instructor Marge Lucas. "This salon was very large, employing 106 people in several positions including stylists, massage therapists, estiticians, and retail specialists."

Veterans Share Their Stories With JVS Students

Members of the Elyria Rotary gave a presentation to Lorain County JVS students in November in honor of Veteran's Day. The men all served in various branches of the United States Armed Forces during either the Korean War or World War II.

Engineering Technology Student Wins Junior Dragster Championship
Nick Moss of Amherst.

Lorain County JVS Engineering Technology student Nick Moss, of Amherst, recently won the Elyria Pattern Big Bond Shootout Junior Dragster Run Off at the Summit Motorsports Racing Park in Norwalk, netting a $6,000 savings bond.

Moss, 17, has been racing junior dragsters since he was 11 years old. He plans to let the savings bond mature, and use it to help finance his education or continue his racing career.

Instructor Honored for Dedication to American Heritage

Lorain County JVS History Instructor, Dan Reed, of Ashland, was honored at the recent 2nd Battalion 7th US Cavalry Regiment of the 1st Air Cavalry Historical Conference in Franklin, Tennessee. Reed attended the conference to interview veterans in preparation for a historical documentary film on the Vietnam War he is helping his students produce as a project in his Military History class. Reed received a plaque for his dedication to American Heritage.

Educational Foundation Awards Superintendent's Scholarship
Superintendent's Scholarship Recipients

Sixty Lorain County JVS junior students were the recipients of the Superintendent's Scholarship. These scholarships were made possible by a grant from the JVS Educational Foundation.

Incoming junior students who passed all of their 10th grade Ohio Graduation tests and had excellent attendance during their freshman and sophomore years were eligible for the $100 scholarship. The scholarship is designed to help offset the cost of school fees, tools and required clothing or equipment.
