JVS Hosts Open House on Sunday, February 8th

Coming February 8th--- a red carpet event for students who want to learn more about the Lorain County JVS!

Students can shine the spotlight on their future by attending the 38th annual Lorain County JVS Open House on Sunday, February 8th, from 1:30-3:30pm. Planned specifically for eighth, ninth, and tenth grade students and their parents, this year's JVS Open House is designed to help young people begin thinking about all the careers that are available to them.

Science Teacher is Named to Leadership Team
David Charles

Lorain County JVS Science Teacher, David Charles, was recently selected as one of eighteen educators to participate in the Career-Technical and Adult Education Leadership Ohio Academy V, formerly known as the Ohio Career-Technical Education Leadership Institute (OVELI).

CTAE Leadership Ohio develops visionary leaders who have the knowledge and skills necessary to change and improve the quality of career-technical and adult education programs.

The Ohio Highway Guy Discusses Career Opportunities With Students
David Finley, the Ohio Highway Guy, with students from the Commercial Truck Technology Program.

Many Lorain County JVS students are looking for solid information to help them decide their career direction. David Finley, the "Ohio Highway Guy" met with JVS students to showcase a variety of career opportunities related to highway design and construction.

Some of the careers Finley highlighted included: carpenters, cement masons, mechanics, operating engineers, civil engineers, construction trades craftsman, and truck drivers. He discussed the many apprenticeship training opportunities available in these areas with interested students.

Students Serve on JVS Educational Foundation Board
Marilee Arnold, Jennie Langford, and Krysa Flowers.

The Lorain County JVS Educational Foundation recently appointed three new student representatives to their board at the January meeting.

Marilee Arnold is a junior in the Diversified Health Occupations Program from Keystone; Jennie Langford is a junior in the Law Enforcement & Security Program from Elyria; and Krysa Flowers is a junior in the Law Enforcement & Security Program from Firelands. Each will serve a one-year term on the JVS Educational Foundation Board.

TEE Student Designs Game for Elyria Library
Samantha Droddy

Lorain County JVS Teacher Education Exploration student, Samantha Droddy, developed a game that was used recently at the Elyria Public Library. The game, fashioned after "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire," focused on the Harry Potter book series. Samantha was invited to debut her game on "Harry Potter Day."

"My family loves Harry Potter," affirmed Droddy, who is a student at Midview High School. "I had fun making up the questions and playing the game with family and friends over the holiday."

Manufacturing Academy Students Sharpen Their Physics Skills

The junior Precision Machine Technology and Computer Design and Drafting students competed in a balsa bridge building contest under the direction of science instructor David Charles.

The bridges had a maximum weight of 100 grams. A competition was held to test each bridge for overall efficiency using a weight system.

This year's winner was Rick Phelps, a junior in the Precision Machine Technology Program from Firelands. His bridge weighed in at an even 100 grams and held 125 pounds giving him an efficiency of 125%.

Adult Cosmetology Students Express Creativity in Styling Contest
Students in the Adult Career Center's Cosmetology Program with their creative heads.

Students in the first year Cosmetology Program at the JVS Adult Career Center participated in a Creative Head Styling Contest. They were given a styrofoam head and asked to create a stylish product.

The students not only designed their hair masterpieces, but also spent a great deal of time fashioning makeup and creating faces on the styrofoam forms.

Their creations were on display and were judged by students in the senior Cosmetology program and Adult Career Center staff.
