JVS Inducts Students Into National Technical Honor Society
JVS National Technical Honor Society

Lorain County JVS recently inducted twenty-nine students into the National-Technical Honor Society (NTHS). The students were honored for outstanding achievement and success in career-technical education. They were selected for membership in the NTHS based on the qualities of citizenship, leadership, workmanship and scholarship.

Adult Cosmetology Students Host Cut-A-Thon to Support Breast Cancer Research
Adult students don pink t-shirts during the Cut-A-Thon for Breast Cancer Research.

The Lorain County JVS Adult Cosmetology students hosted a "Cut-A-Thon" and raised over $500 for the Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk.

During the event Adult Cosmetology students performed a variety of salon services in the EDGEucated Cuts Salon including haircuts, paraffin wax hand treatments, and chair massages.

Swine Flu Information

The health and safety of our staff and students is of the utmost importance to the administration and staff at Lorain County JVS. With the current concern over the swine flu illness that is presently occurring, I am writing to assure you that Lorain County JVS is actively monitoring the situation. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of swine flu within Lorain County JVS.

Recyling is a School Wide Effort at the JVS
A JVS Preschooler takes a flying leap after receiving his Super Hero Cape.

For the past two years the school has been collecting all paper, magazines, cardboard, aluminum cans, scrap metal, televisions and computers.

During the current school year, the students in the Computer Readiness Lab spearheaded a project to collect plastics. "We collect everything from saran wrap to car bumpers," stated instructor Eric Robson. "We even held a community wide plastics collections day, and plan to do that again in the future."

The youngsters in the student-run JVS preschool have also been encouraged to recycle as part of a project called "Love Your Planet." Every preschooler who brought in 50 plastic bottles or jugs earned a special Super Hero cape as their reward for helping to save their planet.

DECA Students Win Statewide Competition and Advance to Nationals

Two Lorain County JVS Business Academy students received high honors in the DECA-An Association of Marketing Students Statewide Competitive Event held recently in Columbus.

Staci Culligan, a senior in the Marketing & Management Program from Elyria and Jessica Reed, a senior in the Business Marketing Co-op Program from North Ridgeville, represented the Lorain County JVS Chapter II DECA youth group. Each student submitted a chapter service project as an entry for the competition.

Teachers' Association Hosts Successful Spaghetti Dinner
People of all ages enjoyed the JVS Spaghetti Dinner.

The Lorain County JVS Teachers' Association recently hosted its annual spaghetti dinner serving almost 400 visitors.

"On behalf of the spaghetti dinner committee I would like to extend our sincere appreciation for your dedication in making the fundraiser a very successful event," stated Chef Instructor Tim Michitsch. "The enthusiasm of the staff made it a very enjoyable evening. It was nice to see everyone working together, having fun with their colleagues, and ultimately raising money to support student activities at the JVS."

Students Learn Workplace Skills During Special Workshop
JVS students work diligently during a recent workshop at the JVS.

Lorain County JVS students had the opportunity to participate in a special 2-day workshop called "It's My Turn!"

Presented by the Ohio Coalition For The Education Of Children With Disabilities, the purpose of the workshop is to help students transition from high school students to adult workers.

Nine Lorain County JVS students took high honors at the State Competition of Family Career & Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) held in Columbus. Seven of the nine students will be advancing to the National Competition in July in Nashville, Tennessee.

TEE Student Receives Scholarship from Ashland University
Felicia Smith

Felicia Smith, a Firelands student in the JVS Teacher Education Exploration Program (TEE), received a $9,000 Director's Scholarship from Ashland University.

The Director's Scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen based on high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores.
