Engineering Technology Students Excel in NASA Internship Program

Lorain County JVS students Cory Trent and Katie Fallon spent the summer honing their technical skills at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Trent and Fallon completed NASA's Lewis Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP), an 8-week internship designed for high school students interested in science, technology, engineering, math or professional administration.
Both are students in the JVS Engineering Technology Program and both will major in engineering when they begin college next fall. They agree that their summer experience at NASA was a great way to get started on reaching their career goals.

"The first time I hit my finger with a hammer, I knew construction was for me," chuckled Tad Clark, a 1988 Lorain County JVS graduate.
Clark, of Amherst, credits his JVS carpentry instructors for helping him learn the technical and life skills he needed to build a successful career when he established Clark Roofing in 1990.

The Lorain County Joint Vocational School added four new individuals to its high school professional staff for the 2009-2010 school year.
Mark Kovi, from Rocky River, is the new Career Services Specialist. Hilary Hoak, from Elyria, will teach Early Childhood Education to junior students. Brian Scanlan, from Amherst, will teach Science. David Rudisill, from Brunswick, will teach Masonry Trades.
Board of Education Honors Retiring Adult Career Center Director

The Lorain County JVS Board of Education honored retiring Adult Career Center Director, Peggy Michener, at a recent board meeting.
Michener began her career at the JVS as a business teacher in 1979, after graduating from Bowling Green State University. She retires with 30 years of service to the Lorain County JVS, most recently in the capacity of Director of the Adult Career Center.
Vendors Needed for JVS Craft Show
The Lorain County JVS is looking for crafters for its annual Craft Show on Saturday, October 24th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
A 6' x 6' space is available for $30, or a 6' x 12' space can be purchased for $50. Tables can be rented for $10 or crafters may bring their own.
Adult Cosmetology Graduates Pass State Board Exams

All of the adult students who completed the 2 year Cosmetology Program at the JVS Adult Career Center passed their state board exams and many of them have already secured employment.
These students include: Pamela Carrion from Lorain; Tabatha Wangbickler from Lorain who is working at A Beau Monde Salon in Amherst; Theresa Davis from Lorain, Emily Swartz from Elyria who is employed at Jaycees Hair Studio in North Ridgeville; Hortensia Agosto from Lorain; Echo Welch from Vermilion; Darlene Rishel from North Ridgeville who is working at Trendsetters Hair & Spa in LaGrange; Luvinia Jackson from Oberlin; Samantha Strohsack from Wellington who is employed at Aries Salon in Oberlin; and Kristin Edwards from Oberlin.
Lorain County JVS Receives Governor's Honor for Being a Healthy School

The Lorain County Joint Vocational School recently received the Governor's Buckeye Best Healthy School Award. Governor Ted Strickland recognized the JVS for providing a healthy environment for students. Only 200 schools from throughout Ohio were honored with this award. The JVS received a "Gold" ranking, the highest award given.
The Governor's Buckeye Best Awards Program, sponsored by the Ohio State Department of Physics, Education and Dance, honors schools for making health education a priority by promoting good nutrition, physical activity and tobacco prevention. The JVS was selected based on its implementation of programs and activities recommended as best practices in health education by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
TEE Student Wins Gold at National FCCLA Event

Courtney Dendorfer, of Wellington, represented the JVS at the 2009 Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in July. Courtney is a Firelands High School student who participated in the JVS Teacher Education Exploration program.
Courtney's award winning project was called "Teach & Train." She taught lessons to elementary aged children at Firelands Elementary School in Oberlin and compiled a binder showing her accomplishments with the project. She received a gold medal for her project at the national event.
Lorain County JVS Students Win Poetry Contest
Ian Webb, a Culinary student from Avon Lake, was one of several JVS students who entered a national poetry contest sponsored by Creative Communications Inc., a publishing company located in Utah. Webb's poem was chosen from among thousands of entries to be published in a poetry anthology called "A Celebration of Poets." Webb also received a complimentary copy of the book and a $50 savings bond.
