Adult Career Center Adds Managing Esthetician Program to Course Offerings
Adult Cosmetology student, Viviana Perez of Lorain, gives a client a facial in the EDGEucated Cuts Salon.

The Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center is offering a new program for students interested in skin care. The Managing Esthetician course is a 750-hour program that trains students to perform skin analysis, facials, waxing, make-up and body treatments. Students will also be taught to use a variety of electrical machines and learn about salon management and retail sales.

Law Enforcement Students Videoconference With Forensic Pathologist

Lorain County JVS Law Enforcement and Security students participated in a unique video conference sponsored by The Ohio State University Medical Center and COSI.

Students watched a presentation by retired Forensic Pathologist Dr. Larry R. Tate who provided live commentary on the autopsy process.

Welding Students Share Their Knowledge with Students from Wellington

Sparks were flying for a group of Wellington High School Agricultural Mechanics students when they visited the Lorain County JVS Welding & Fabrication Program. The purpose of the visit was to give the students some intensive hand-on introduction in basic welding skills that are a part of the agricultural mechanics curriculum.

Culinary Team Demonstrates on WVIZ/PBS Culinary Show

Ryan Valentik, a culinary arts student from Keystone, and JVS Culinary Instructor Tim Michitsch prepared Green Chili during the WVIZ/PBS broadcast called 'C is for Culinary Arts'. The program featured 10 culinary students and instructors from career-technical schools throughout northeast Ohio.

JVS students Rachel Klier (Wellington), Heather Campbell (Columbia) and Brad Thomas (Amherst) also assisted their classmate by helping with "behind the scenes" preparations including set-up, food prep and clean-up.

The show aired during WVIZ/PBS Ideastream's pledge drive in December.

Carpentry Student Elected as SkillsUSA Regional President

Dominic Rogers, a junior from North Ridgeville in the Lorain County JVS Carpentry Program, was recently elected as President for the North Central Region of SkillsUSA. This is the first time a Lorain County JVS student was elected President for this regional officer position.

As Regional President, Rogers will be responsible for helping to plan the SkillsUSA competition held at the Medina County Career Center in March. In addition, Dominic will be attending the SkillsUSA Regional Officer Training Institute in Leesburg, Virginia with the other officers from around the country. There are 49 officers who will be attending from Ohio. The group will also tour key sites in Washington, DC as part of their trip.

Students in the JVS Career Readiness Lab received a powerful message from Susan Muszynski, Project Love Facilitator. Project Love is a character-building education and training organization which empowers teens and adults to foster a culture of kindness, caring and respect in their home and school environments.
