Welcome to the May 2010 edition of the JVS Adult Career Center FOCUS. This e-newsletter was created to keep you up to date on Adult Career Center happenings, upcoming events and courses, and the achievements and challenges of our school. The Adult Career Center provides training for adults looking to change careers or upgrade current job skills. Custom training, staff assessments and other services are available on- or off-site to assist businesses with their staff training needs.

Attending classes at the JVS Adult Career Center means joining more than 5,000 Lorain County adults like you who are committed to improving their lives through career-technical training. Whether you're looking to start a new career, improve current job skills, or enhance your daily life, we're here to help you get connected!

Connect to Affordable Training: The JVS benefits from the support of its community, allowing us to offer many training programs at half the cost of other learning institutions to Lorain County residents.

Connect to Financing: Pell Grant funding assistance is available to qualified applicants for any course over 600 hours at the JVS. Our financial aid specialist can walk you through your eligibility and other financing options.

Connect to College Credit: Many of our courses have articulated agreements with local colleges and universities that allow you to save additional money by transferring JVS credits to apply towards 2- and 4-year degree institutions!

Connect to Hands-On Training: The JVS invests in state-of-the-art facilities that mirror today's work environments. In addition, we hire instructors with real-world experience in your field to ensure your training is relevant and practical.

Connect to Local Business: Our advisory boards benefit from business leaders who share training requirements they expect of new employees, and coordinate internships and work-studies at their places of business to give you needed experience in the field.

Building Trades Students Put Finishing Touches on the Home They've Designed and Built from the Ground Up

Our Building Trades program prepares students for jobs in the building, contracting and remodeling industries through classroom and hands-on training to teach students the fundamentals of Blueprint Reading, Electricity, Carpentry, Plumbing, Masonry, and Heating and Air Systems. The focus of these classes is for students to learn the skills necessary to apply their knowledge to common problems they may face on the job, by designing and building a house right in their lab at the JVS!

Senior Living Fair Gives Students an Opportunity to Shine

On Friday, May 7th, students from the JVS participated in the United Way 5th Annual Senior Living Fair. This year's theme was "Aging is Everyone's Business". The JVS Adult Career Center's own Mike Krupar, instructor of the Food Services program, gave cooking demonstrations with several of his students sharing techniques on low-sodium and low-fat cooking with plenty of flavor. Our Cosmetology students offered hand and arm massages and polish changes for a luxurious treat.

Spotlight On…Customized Training

When Intertek Machining and Welding Inc. of Elyria needed safety training for their employees, they contacted the JVS Adult Career Center. Ralph Bentley, a Program Developer at the JVS, coordinated and conducted OSHA training for Intertek, including Walking and Working Surfaces, Electrical, Personal Protective Equipment, Machine Guarding, Material Handling and HazCom. Ten employees passed the test and will receive their OSHA cards.

Medical Assisting Candle Light Ceremony

The Adult Career Center held the annual Pinning and Candle lighting Ceremony for the Medical Assisting Class on Tuesday, April 27. The pinning ceremony is the culmination of the initial journey to medical assisting education and signifies the educational preparation of the wearer.

Special Interest Course: Now Accepting Enrollment for Cooking with Susan

Susan Aldrich loves cooking and sharing her skills and ideas. She studied under a world-renowned chef at the Cleveland Yacht Club for several years. She later attended Baldwin Wallace College where she received her degree in Home Economics. She later worked for the Original Cookie Company developing new cookie and brownie recipes. She makes her cooking classes fun with plenty of tips and ideas, so bring a healthy appetite and your questions to an upcoming class!

Hey Teachers! Earn Online Graduate Courses from Ashland University through the JVS

Want to take classes on your own time, without leaving the comfort of your home? Teachers working on license renewal can earn one graduate credit hour from Ashland University through the JVS Adult Career Center. To earn the graduate credit, you will complete twelve online quizzes and earn an 80 or higher on the online final. Tuition is $250 for the online class and the graduate credit. Course requirements are sent upon request.

The Lorain County Growth Partnership is hosting these Project HIRE special events to outline how Lorain County businesses can participate in this program that provides an immediate financial benefit. At these events, you will learn about cost savings, tax benefits, how to qualify job candidates, and how to use the simple One-Stop process to start you on the road of savings.

Computerized Business Technology Interns Learn On the Job at Local Businesses

Students enrolled the JVS Adult Career Center Computerized Business Technology program have begun a three-week, 120-hour work-based learning experience as the final stage in their 9-month long program. Since September, our students have been intensely training for careers as Secretarial Office Support, Accounting Clerks, Microsoft Certified Application Specialists, and Administrative Assistants.

JVS Students Prepare to Take Learning to the Next Level with College 101

The JVS recently hosted Lorain County Community College's introductory course, "College 101" to ease the transition for 20 adult JVS students who are looking to continue their education at nearby LCCC. The JVS and LCCC partner in many ways to advance student learning and achievement in Lorain County, most notably through articulated agreements in which many JVS credits transfer to LCCC, saving them time and money as they continue their education.

Adult Cosmetology Students Raise Money and Awareness for Breast Cancer

On Monday, May 3, 2010, the 2nd Annual Breast Cancer Cut-A-Thon was held at the Lorain County JVS EDGEucated Cuts Salon from 5:00-8:00 PM. All haircuts were only $10.00. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for the Cure, a 60-mile walk with the aim of raising funding and awareness for breast cancer research. Together, our students raised $370. Our local American Heart Association director even came out to visit, lending additional significance to our efforts. Thanks to the many people who participated in this worthy cause--our students are already working on ideas for next year. Hope to see you there!
