JVS Hosts Marine Corps Birthday Celebration

The United States Marine Corps recently celebrated its 235th birthday and the JVS hosted a celebration in honor of the event as a way to recognize all veterans and active duty military in honor of Veterans' Day.
The JVS also unveiled a "Military Wall of Honor" with the names and photographs of alumni who have served in the military. The plaques are on display in a gallery in the front of the building, and in a virtual gallery on the JVS webpage.

Michael Grisa knew he was college-bound before he ever set foot inside the Lorain County JVS.
"My dad is an engineer, so I've always been interested in electricity, taking stuff apart and figuring out how things work," said Grisa, who attended Avon High School and enrolled in the JVS Manufacturing Engineering Technology Program, a college tech-prep program.
Adult Learners Succeed with Support from Adult Career Center
Learning is a lifelong process and the JVS Adult Career Center knows that returning to school isn't always easy and that adult learners have unique needs. The Adult Career Center provides a comfortable learning environment and offers students sound, practical training along with the support services they need to achieve their career goals.

Students Collect 3,100 Pounds of Food for Second Harvest Food Bank
The JVS career-technical youth organizations collected over 3,100 pounds of food to restock the shelves of the Second Harvest Food Bank. Food was donated by students, staff members and community friends.
"This annual holiday food drive nets on the average of 3,000-4,000 pounds of food," commented JVS instructor and food drive coordinator Linda Varga. "We are happy with this year's results based on the state of the economy. We have a very generous group of students and staff."
Baking & Pastry Arts Students Create Signature Dessert for Women of Compassion Event

Two Baking & Pastry Arts students created the signature dessert served at the Community Foundation of Greater Lorain County's "Women of Compassion" event at Lorain County Community College.
Sarah Doppelheuer (Midview) and Jonelle Kirby (Oberlin) worked together to create a Carmel Apple Cheesecake.
JVS Students Teach Third Graders About Food and Agriculture
Students in the Landscape and Greenhouse Management and Industrial Equipment Mechanics Programs participated in "Food for America" at the Wellington Fair Grounds.
Students from these two JVS programs, along with students involved in FFA from Wellington and Firelands High Schools, spent time with 125 third graders from the Clearview School District.
Welding Students Share Their Skills with Wellington Students
Sparks were flying for a group of Wellington High School Agricultural Mechanics students when they visited the JVS Welding & Fabrication Program. The purpose of the visit was to give the students some intensive hands-on introduction in basic welding skills that are part of the agricultural mechanics curriculum.
Blood Drive Raises Scholarship Dollars for JVS Students
The Allied Health Science (AHS) Program students organized the Fall Blood Drive held recently at the JVS for LifeShare Community Blood Services.
LifeShare donates $500 to the JVS for every 35 pints of blood collected. With the 200 total units collected at this drive, the JVS has already netted $2,500.00 to be used for scholarships. More will be added to that with the spring drive.
