JVS Hosts Open House on February 6th
The Lorain County JVS Open House will be held on Sunday, February 6, from 1:30-3:30pm.
This event is is designed to provide attendees with an in-depth look at 27 high school career-technical programs in seven career areas: Building Trades, Business/Marketing, Community Service/Healthcare, Culinary, Manufacturing/Pre-engineering, Transportation

Amherst Resident Pursues Her Passion Through Non-Traditional Training Program at the Adult Career Center
With the national unemployment rate hovering at about 10 percent, adults are enrolling in classes in record numbers to enhance their skills or learn new trades.
While returning to school is rewarding, it is also challenging for these "non-traditional" students, some who are working full-time jobs and cracking the books after prolonged breaks in their educations.
Count Jennifer Koleno among these students. Koleno, of Amherst, became a certified welder through the Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center's Welding & Fabrication Program.

Adult Career Center Partners in Connect Your Community (CYC) Initiative to Provide Computer Training
Connect Your Community is a unique computer training program for economic and social advancement in Lorain County.
The CYC program offers free computer training, tech-support, and subsidized high-speed Internet service (where available) for eligible households in Lorain County. A session will be held at the JVS beginning on January 11th.
JVS Students Serve Their Communities
Lorain County JVS students in Erin Byrne's American Civics class recently had a very unique assignment. They were asked to donate four hours of their time to help someone in need or to benefit the community.
Students from the Carpentry, Early Childhood Education, Heating & Air Conditioning, Industrial Electricity, Landscape & Greenhouse Management, Masonry Trades, and Plumbing & Pipefitting programs participated in a wide range of activities which included volunteering at nursing homes, senior centers, the Salvation Army, food banks, and after school latchkey and youth programs.
Avon Student Takes 1st Place in Bricklaying Competition
Lorain County JVS Masonry Trades student Mike Madan took 1st Place in the Ohio Administrative District Council of Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers' Holiday Masonry Contest in Hudson, Ohio on December 10th.
Madan, of Avon, followed a print to create a geometric utility brick project. He competed against the top masonry students from other Northeastern Ohio career-technical schools in this district wide competition.
Early Childhood Education Students Host Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive
Students in the Early Childhood Education Program hosted the "Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive" at the JVS as part of a national service project for FCCLA (Family Career and Community Leaders of America).
Children in the 3 year-old preschool class and the children of JVS staff members were invited to wear their pajamas
to a special evening preschool session. The class was
scheduled in the evening so that parents had the opportunity to go shopping.

The Lorain County JVS recently hosted the Northeast Ohio Education Association (NEOEA) conference. Approximately 315 delegates from around the state attended this successful event. The support of the delegates, volunteers, students and administration made for a very positive day in Ohio education. JVS Culinary students prepared and served breakfast to all in attendance.
