Governor Ted Strickland recognized the JVS for providing a healthy environment for students. Only 200 schools from throughout Ohio were honored with this award. The JVS received a "Gold" ranking, the highest award given. The Governor's Buckeye Best Awards Program, sponsored by the Ohio State Department of Physics, Education and Dance, honors schools for making health education a priority by promoting good nutrition, physical activity and tobacco prevention. The JVS was selected based on its implementation of programs and activities recommended as best practices in health education by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the activities designed and implemented by the JVS' School Health Team included a school-wide walking program, food samplings of healthy food choices, and promoting tobacco-free school activities.
