Student Advances to National Competition

Nine Lorain County JVS students placed in the top ten for their contests at the Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference competition held at the Columbus Convention Center in early March.

Aniya Qualls, Cybersecurity and Networking junior from Midview, placed second in the Prepared Speech event, qualifying her for the national competition being held in Dallas, Texas in May.

“Competing was exciting and going with my classmates from JVS was great,” shared Qualls. “Being the President of our BPA Chapter, made me proud to see us participate.”

Qualls shared that she was surprised to advance to the national level. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t feel that confident after my competition, but they called my name at the awards ceremony for placing in the top ten, so I felt great. Then they announced the top three, which are the ones that go on to the next level, and they called my name for second place and I was surprised and grateful!”

The national conference will bring together an estimated 6,000 students from across the country to compete for top honors in business, finance, technology, and marketing skills competitions. “It is not just a sense of school pride, I have a feeling of state pride too,” Qualls said. “I’m excited to go to Texas!”
While in Dallas, participants will also have the opportunity to network with other Business Professional of America members and participate in a walk that raises money for the Special Olympics.
“All of the students worked hard, and they have made us proud,” shared Tina Krosse, Lorain County JVS Web and Graphic Design instructor. “The students were excited to be able to compete in person this year.”
