Meet Joel Shupp
Joel Shupp is a dedicated junior at Lorain County JVS, currently enrolled in the Cybersecurity and Networking program. Coming from North Ridgeville High School, he started his journey at LCJVS in his sophomore year, eager to explore new opportunities in a more hands-on learning environment.

Why LCJVS and Cybersecurity and Networking?
Joel’s decision to attend LCJVS was driven by both a recommendation from a friend and the desire to have more opportunities that were offered at LCJVS. After exploring multiple labs including Web and Graphic Design, Business, and Bakery Pastry Arts—he found his passion in Cybersecurity and Networking. “The program’s combination of technical skills, problem-solving, and coding opportunities excite me, and make it the perfect fit,” said Joel.

The Impact of LCJVS
Attending LCJVS has been a game-changer for Joel. The hands-on experience has given him valuable, practical skills and industry connections that he wouldn’t have had otherwise. He’s gained insight into different career paths, networked with IT professionals, and even participated in regional competitions like SkillsUSA, broadening his exposure to the tech field.
Ohio is at the forefront of technological advancements, with industries increasingly relying on cybersecurity professionals to protect data and systems.

The state has become a hub for tech innovation, ranking among the top in the nation for job growth in IT-related fields. With LCJVS preparing students with industry-recognized certifications and work-based learning experience, graduates like Joel are positioned to fill critical roles in Ohio’s evolving digital economy.

Support from Instructors
Joel credits much of his success to his instructors, who have continuously pushed him to seize every opportunity. Whether it was encouraging him to explore SkillsUSA, connecting him with IT professionals at networking events, or preparing him for industry certifications, his teachers have played a crucial role in shaping his career direction. “Their guidance has not only helped me build technical expertise but also instilled confidence in my future,” Joel shared.

Advice for Prospective Students
For students considering LCJVS, Joel’s message is simple: give it a shot! “Career-tech programs aren’t for everyone, but they offer a unique way to explore careers in a hands-on setting,” Joel said. He recommends taking a tour, attending open houses, and testing the waters in sophomore year to see if LCJVS is the right fit for you. “With the right mindset, the opportunities here can be life-changing.”

By investing in workforce-ready education, Lorain County JVS is not just shaping individual success stories but also contributing to Ohio’s economy by supplying skilled professionals in high-demand fields.
