Student Spotlight Series: Building a Strong Future in Masonry Trades
Ohio’s construction industry is booming, with demand for skilled workers at an all-time high. According to the Associated Builders and Contractors, the industry will need to attract an estimated 439,000 new workers in 2025 to meet labor demands. Amazon has pledged another $10 billion to Ohio data centers, further fueling demand for trade professionals.

For students like Elijah Gonzalez, a senior in the Masonry Trades program at Lorain County JVS, this presents an exciting opportunity. With a passion for craftsmanship and a dedication to hands-on learning, Elijah is taking full advantage of his time at LCJVS to prepare for a rewarding career in the construction industry.

Finding His Passion in Masonry – Meet Elijah Gonzalez
Elijah, a Wellington High School student, started at LCJVS as a freshman, eager to gain hands-on experience in a career-focused environment. "I was always more of a hands-on learner," he shares. "Sitting in a classroom all day wasn’t for me. I wanted to do something physical—something I could feel proud of once it was done."

His interest in the construction field led him to masonry, where he thrives on the challenge of working with materials like brick, block, and concrete. "It’s satisfying to see a structure take shape because of the work I put in," he adds.

Career-Ready Experience at LCJVS
LCJVS is equipping Elijah with real-world experience that employers value. He has tackled large projects, including pouring four-footers and mastering concrete work, which he believes gives him an edge. "I feel more prepared to jump into my career after graduation," Elijah says.

His dedication paid off—Elijah interned at Dene’s Concrete over the summer, impressing the team so much that he’s now on early job placement with the company. "They teach me a lot beyond what I’m learning in school, working on big concrete jobs and building connections," he shares. Elijah plans to continue working at Dene’s Concrete after graduation, setting him on the path toward a successful career in Ohio’s high-demand construction industry.

Mentorship and Support at LCJVS
Elijah credits much of his success to the mentorship of his instructor, Dave Rudisill (Rudy). "Rudy has been a great mentor," Elijah says. "He not only teaches us the trade but also how to think critically and improve our skills."

Beyond his masonry class, Elijah values the strong support network at LCJVS. "It’s not just the instructors in your program—everyone here wants you to succeed," he says. He recalls getting truck repair advice from an auto mechanics instructor, highlighting the school’s culture of collaboration and real-world learning.
