Industrial Electricity Students Work on New Oberlin Elementary School Building

Industrial Electricity junior students found out firsthand what work would be like in their chosen career field.

Three Lorain County JVS Industrial Electricity junior students found out firsthand what work would be like in their chosen career field, as they worked on the new Oberlin Elementary School building earlier this month.

Kaleb Taylor, Industrial Electricity junior from Wellington shared what the experience was like for him and his classmates. “It was good firsthand experience to be able to see what we will be doing in our careers and not just watch them work, but to help alongside for a full day and really see what a work day is like.”

Students worked alongside apprentices from Jim’s Electric, a North Ridgeville based company, and ran grid wire to the lights in the drop tile ceilings, and wired up lights with MC cable whips.

“It was cool to work alongside those guys,” said Adam Henderson, Industrial Electricity junior from Amherst. “They showed us some different ways to do things. I did feel prepared to go to an actual worksite too because of the way Mr. Kuhn has been teaching us all year.”

Bill Kuhn, Industrial Electricity instructor said he teaches from his personal career experiences. “I take my experience from the field and try to give the students real world techniques. It isn’t always standard textbook ways, but things that they will actually see and use in the field to be more efficient and be successful in this trade.”
