JVS Welcomes Students Back to School

Lucas Rupert, carpentry senior (Avon) gets right to work on his first day of school

The 2020-21 JVS school year kicked off this week with excitement and nervous energy as students returned to campus in a staggered schedule.

According to Tina Pelto, high school principal, 1,214 students returned to the building.  “I am so proud of our students,” said Pelto. “They are wearing their masks, following the directional guides in the hallway and are acting in a patient, mature fashion as we navigate this new “normal” together.  It is wonderful to see our students excited to be back in school learning!”

The new normal has students in their career tech programs two to three times each week and the students were very excited to be there. “It is nice to be back,” shared Emily Wells, landscape and greenhouse management senior from Midview. “It is a little weird with the schedule but other than that, I just hope our senior year is as normal as it can be.”

JVS welcomed 10th and 12th grade students on Monday, August 31st and 9th and 11th grade students on Thursday, September 3rd. With the many safety measures in place like hand sanitation stations around the building, cleaning supplies in each classroom, directional guides in hallways and staggered lunches, the JVS is following the guidelines put in place and is doing what needs to be done to keep their students and staff safe.

Auto Technology instructor, Eric Hohman, said he was happy to have his students back in his career tech lab. “The only challenge I really see right now is just learning the different schedules, and that will come with time, but other than that, I know we can handle it. This field, and so many others, need to be adaptable, and this is showing the students how things are ever changing and you need to be able to change along with it.”
