The Lorain County JVS Adult Career Center Cosmetology program, which was delayed in starting due to the pandemic, came together to celebrate the completion of the two-year career development curriculum.
Ten students were celebrated for their dedication and achievements. Michelle Maze, the Cosmetology instructor, expressed her pride in the students, remarking, "I am very proud of this class. They were the first class back after the pandemic, and because of this there were issues we had to deal with; like getting all our supplies for the program and getting the lab and classroom spaces reorganized.”
Maze shared how this extra work brought the class closer together. “The students helped me organize the classroom and had a say in some procedures. I think they liked that I asked their opinions on things.”
One of the students, Jazzman Pearson, shared her positive experience, stating, "I truly enjoyed being in this program and all of my classmates. They kept me coming back every day, and they became like family to me. The instructors are knowledgeable and kind people that you can learn a lot from, not just in cosmetology but in life in general."
Maze, with three decades of industry experience, has maintained continuous involvement with Lorain County JVS. She shared, "I graduated from LCJVS, and ever since then have been involved with the school and the cosmetology program, whether that has been with being on advisory committees, having students intern at my salon, or hiring graduates."
Each student completed the required number of hours and is now eligible to take the Ohio State Board exam. Maze expressed confidence in their success, saying, "I believe they will all pass with flying colors. Six of them already have jobs lined up!"
Pearson is eagerly anticipating the state board test, stating, "I can't wait to get my license and become a cosmetologist, specializing in hair and eyelash extensions."
Another student, Marissa Kloock, discovered a new path during the program, sharing, "Through this process, I found that I want to focus on the esthetician side of cosmetology, and I am going to head back to school to become a medical esthetician."
