Career-Technical Student Organizations

The JVS encourages students to join the career-technical student organization that is related to their program. Student organizations, also called Vocational Youth Clubs, are an important part of the education process at the JVS.

Student organizations are designed to develop leadership potential, cooperation, social interactions, and an awareness and appreciation of good citizenship. Student officers are elected and help plan activities. All members have the opportunity to participate in regional, state and national competitions. Career-technical organizations help students develop their leadership skills and provide many community service opportunities.

Business Professionals of America

The mission of Business Professionals of America is to contribute to the preparation of a world-class workforce through the advancement of leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills. Business Professionals of America will be a cohesive agent in the worldwide networking of education, business, and industry. Business Professionals of America will be the leading student organization in preparing a world-class workforce. Business Professionals of America will set a standard of excellence for vocational student organizations.

DECA

DECA chapters operate in 5,000 high schools across the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and Canada. With over 172,000 members (mostly juniors and seniors), DECA's high school division is recognized and endorsed by all 50 state Departments of Education and the U.S. Department of Education.

Membership in the high school division is restricted to students with a career interest in hospitality, finance, sales and service, business administration and/or entrepreneurship. DECA programs are co-curricular, meaning programs are based on nationally recognized standards in one or more of the curriculum areas.

DECA provides specific programs for the classroom teacher to use in student development and achievement. These programs can be organized into four (4) categories: Leadership Development, Community Service, Skill Assessment and Academic Skill Development.

Educators Rising

Educators Rising is a free national membership organization for aspiring teachers and their mentors. If you are leading or participating in a school-based program that helps young people explore teaching — in secondary or postsecondary — consider joining Educators Rising to connect with peers and experts around the country who are focusing on the same issues and challenges.

Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)

FCCLA is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization for young men and women in family and consumer sciences education in public and private school through grade 12. Everyone is part of a family, and Family Career and Community Leaders of America is the only national career and technical student organization with the family as its central focus. Since 1945, FCCLA members have been making a difference in their families, careers and communities by addressing important personal, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education. Today over 225,000 members in nearly 7,000 chapters are active in a network of associations in 50 states as well as in the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

Chapter projects focus on a variety of youth concerns, including teen pregnancy, parenting, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, environment, nutrition and fitness, teen violence and career exploration.

Involvement in FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life -- planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making and interpersonal communication -- necessary in the home and workplace.

The National FFA Organization-An Assoication of Agricultural Students

The National FFA Organization was organized as the "Future Farmers of America" in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. In 1988, the official organization name was changed to The National FFA Organization to reflect the broadening field of agriculture, which today encompasses more than 300 careers in everything from agriscience to biotechnology to turf grass management.

FFA operates on local, state and national levels. Student members belong to chapters organized at the local school level. Agricultural education instructors serve as chapter advisors. Chapters are organized under state associations headed by an advisor and executive secretary, often employees of the state department of education. States conduct programs and host annual conventions.

HOSA

HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education (HSE) Division of ACTE. HOSA's two-fold mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA's goal is to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.

HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions. HOSA is 100% health care!

Vocational Youth Council/Interact

The Vocational Youth Club Council is made up of JVS students from all program areas who are members of the vocational youth leadership and social clubs. All interested students may apply to become a member of this group and can help plan a calendar of school-wide activities. In previous years, the council has held dances, roller skating parties, Thanksgiving food drives, helped with Open House, Parent Conference Days, and other JVS special events.

LCJVS Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for students. The Interact Club carries out at least two service projects yearly, one that serves the school or the community, and another that furthers international understanding. The LCJVS Interact Club is sponsored by the Elyria Rotary Club, which provides guidance on a continuing basis. In addition, Interactors often form a service partnership with the sponsoring Rotarians, lending their enthusiastic support to a variety of Rotary projects.

Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people ages 14-18. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends.

Through service activities, Interactors learn the importance of:

Developing leadership skills and personal integrity;
Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others; and
Advancing international understanding and goodwill.

National Technical Honor Society

National Technical Honor Society is the acknowledged leader in the recognition of outstanding student achievement in career and technical education. Over 2000 schools and colleges throughout the United States and its territories are affiliated with the Society. NTHS encourages higher scholastic achievement, cultivates a desire for personal excellence, and helps top students find success in today's highly competitive workplace.

SkillsUSA - Vocational Industrial Clubs of America

SkillsUSA is a Career-Technical Student Organization serving more than 34,000 students and Advisors in Industrial/Engineering Systems and Health Careers Training Programs.

Secondary contestants are students enrolled in a coherent sequence of courses or career major that prepares the student for further education and/or employment related to technology, the health industry, trades or industry and is earning credit toward a high school diploma/certificate or its equivalent during the school year immediately preceding the National Leadership and Skills Conference.
