JVS Interns Earn $223,000 This Summer

Industrial Electricity interns with lab instructor Bill Kuhn

As part of the 2019 Lorain County JVS Summer Internship Program, sixty-five students successfully completed the program earning over $223,000. A total of 52 different companies employed interns over the summer providing mentoring and valuable opportunities for students to practice the technical skills they learned at JVS in a work-based learning environment.

Annette McIver, Lorain County JVS Career Services Specialist, shared how the students were excited to utilize their skills on the job. “They told me about a variety of interesting projects they worked on and the new experience they acquired. A huge “thank you” to the 52 businesses and organizations who provided students with an opportunity to utilize and expand their knowledge. Together, we are building the talent pipeline that our community needs to grow.”

Sundae Funday’s in Columbia Station is where Corrin Bigler, Bakery and Pastry Arts senior from Columbia, worked. You could tell by the excitement in her voice how much she loved her summer internship experience. “Some of the things that I did at my job was make pizzas, serve ice cream, and operate the cash register.  My lab prepared me well for this job, and it helped me feel comfortable when I first got started.”

Karee Hayden, Co-Owner and Co-Manager of Sundae Funday’s, shared that having a JVS summer intern was excellent for her and her company. “I really liked the structure of the internship. It was great that the teacher was involved, and that we all had meetings together. That made it really work well for everyone.”

Precision Machine Technology senior from Midview, Chris Farr, was beyond happy with his summer internship job. As a Summer Intern, Chris worked 40 hours per week at Parker Aerospace in Avon machining airplane parts. “I absolutely loved working with the company. The machinist team was very helpful and very friendly,” said Farr.

The Summer Internship Program is an opportunity available to junior students who have successfully completed their first year of career-technical training, and who have superior attendance and strong teacher recommendations. This experience extends student learning beyond the classroom and provides students with real world work experience. Students also have the opportunity to interact with company employees and mentors, and develop a direct pathway to additional education and training or future employment.

The JVS Summer Interns were honored at a special luncheon in September at the JVS.  The internship participants are listed by associate high school below. The participating businesses will be recognized at the JVS Fall Advisory meeting on October 28 on the district’s campus.
