JVS Teachers Have Major Influence on Students

Three Lorain County JVS teachers were selected as having the most influence on their student’s education, as part of the Midview High School’s Academic “M” Awards. Each year, these award recipients are asked to select an influential educator in their life. This year, Jason Christner, JVS Sports, Health and Fitness Technology instructor; Sandra Hernandez, JVS Cosmetology instructor; and Holly Sofia, JVS Allied Health Sciences instructor were selected by their students.

Savanna Wilson, Sports, Health and Fitness Technology senior, said she selected Jason Christner because he always encourages her to do her best and has helped her find her career path. “I have never met a teacher that cares as much about their students as he does,” said Wilson. “I never really knew what I wanted to do when I got older, but because of him, I was able to decide and find the right career choice for me. His personality is one of a kind, and I wish there were more people in the world like him.”

Cosmetology senior, Madison Gregory, selected Sandra Hernandez because she has taught her so much in such a little amount of time. “We recently opened the salon, and of course we were super nervous. She made everyone in class feel comfortable and settled our nerves by talking to us and telling us it was going to be okay. She reminded us that we are students and that she didn’t expect us to know everything. It made us all feel calmer.”

“Mrs. Sofia made me work harder than any other teacher I’ve had,” shared Chayla Herner, Allied Health Sciences senior. “She doesn’t just teach you what you need to know to get through school; she teaches you what you need to know to get through life. She makes our lessons fun and informative and she truly cares about her students’ success.”

Sofia shared how honored she was to bear witness to Chayla’s accomplishments. “Chayla is a fine young lady who is pleasant, respectful and has a clear vision of her career goals.  I challenge all my students to work hard and reach their potentials both academically and professionally, and Chayla has embraced that. She is one of those "quiet" students who is on the verge of blossoming and I look forward to being her cheerleader for the rest of her senior year and the future.”

Honored is the word that comes to Hernandez when asked how she felt being nominated. “I am honored that Madison chose me as having such a positive influence on her education. It warms my heart, and gives confirmation to my passion and purpose.”

“I am beyond humbled,” said Christner. “This makes all of the time and hard work worth it. This is why we teach.”
