Manufacturing

Manufacturing Programs
Manufacturing refers to the processing of raw materials or parts into finished goods using tools, human labor, machinery, and chemical processing. Manufacturing allows businesses to sell finished products at a higher cost than the value of the raw materials used. Aircraft, automobiles, chemicals, clothing, computers, consumer electronics, electrical equipment, furniture, heavy machinery, refined petroleum products, ships, steel, and tools and dies are some of the examples of manufacturing industries. Manufacturers typically need technical skills for hands-on work with equipment, and the ability to coordinate production alongside other skilled workers.

There is a shortage of skilled production workers in Lorain County and beyond. As a member of the Lorain County Manufacturing Sector Partnership (LCMSP) (http://www.lcmsp.org/members/lcjvs) we partner with them to train adults to fill jobs in the manufacturing industry. These three career development manufacturing programs we currently offer at the adult career center: Manual Machining, CNC Programming and Operations and Certified Production Technician.

Manual Machining Program
This course is a combination of classroom and hands-on training that helps students prepare for a career in Tool and Die, Mold Making and many other metal working trades. Students will gain a basic understanding of lathes, mills, and grinders to attain all the manual skills to become a quality machinist. Machine from a print - critical to move into CNC side of things. This is the basic understanding before entering the CNC side - to get precision grinding mastered - you will always use this skill, even in retrospect.

Students can obtain NIMS credentialing in:
  • Measurement
  • Materials and Safety
  • Job Planning
  • Benchwork and Layout

Program Information
Tuition - $3,200.00*
Hours - 200 hours
Dates - Fall 2024

This is a Career Development (CD) program that is approved by the Commission of the Council of Occupational Education. (COE)

CNC Programming and Operations Program
Students will gain a basic understanding of CNC setup, operations, and programming as well as an introduction to CAD/CAM software. This program prepares students to take the NIMS credentialing in CNC Mill Operations test. Students must be above proficient in math and have computer programming skills. There is no individualized training offered for those who do not meet this recommended skill level. Students will handwrite programs, learn g and m codes, and learn to recognize the code to be able to diagnose and enhance a program to do what you want it to do. Students will use CAM and CAD programs to select services on 3-D models and apply machining strategies to design models.

Completing Manual Machining is not a prerequisite; however, it is highly recommended that students have manual machining knowledge.
